Updates and repair
Update the panel in one click while your apps keep running, and put back generated files someone edited by hand.
Update
The panel checks for a newer release every 6 hours. When there's one, Update available appears at the bottom of the sidebar, with the new version. Click it to see what's new, then Update to …. The dialog shows the installer's output while it runs, and the page reloads on the new version.
To check now, use Settings → Version → Check for updates. That's also where you turn the automatic checks off. On the server:
layer update # the newest release, if it's newer than yours
layer update 0.2.0 # a specific one, also an older one to go back
The agent downloads the release and its installer from the update feed, https://get.selfhostlayer.com/releases.json, and checks both against the checksums the feed lists. Then it runs the installer in its own systemd unit, layer-update.service.
Your apps keep running: only the panel and the agent restart. The installer keeps the server's settings as they are, and the last 3 releases stay on disk.
journalctl -u layer-update.service -f # follow an update
cat /opt/layer/current/VERSION # the version running now
Repair
If someone edits or deletes a generated file by hand, Settings → Repair, or layer repair on the server, puts it back and restarts what it feeds. That covers:
- app units, cron units and Redis units
- Caddy sites
- env files
The agent remembers what it wrote to each file, so repair only touches files that changed. The installer's own files are left to a re-run of the installer, which is always safe:
curl -fsSL https://get.selfhostlayer.com | bash
